Progressive Auto Insurance

Progressive Auto Insurance

I purchased a new (to me) 2002 Dodge Neon SE Sedan 4D (Silver) in August 2009 and Progressive Auto Insurance offered me the best quote so they got my business. Progressive offers some pretty cool features, the coolest of which is their MyRate Program which I immediately signed up for.

Progressive Auto Insurance has been testing out the MyRate Program (formerly called TripSense) for a few years now and it’s finally taking the system national (Press Release), bringing pay-as-you-drive auto insurance into the mainstream. The monitoring device, a rebranded and customized Davis Instruments CarChip (see images below) plugs into your car’s OBD-II diagnostic port (all cars made after 1996 have one). It studiously records your driving habits, wirelessly and securely sending data to Progressive HQ about when, how much and how you drive your car.

Every six months, Progressive will crunch the numbers and issue a new rate for you based on how you drive — anywhere from a 60 percent discount to a 9 percent surcharge. In some states, there will also be a technology expense for the cost of the monitoring device and data transmission. You do not get to see all of the data collected but you can view reports of some of the data online at Progressive.com (named #1 auto insurance website for 2008).

This review will be an ongoing one — updated over time…

2009-09-09: Received Initial 4% Discount Rate (Equal To $33.21 Or ~$5.54/month)
2009-09-15: Installed Monitoring Device (Delayed Until This Date Due To Scheduled Maintenance)

Impression After One Week Of Usage:

2009-09-22: For a solid week now I have been driving with the monitoring device installed — checking the reports at Progressive.com daily. So far I am very impressed with the entire MyRate Program. A $33.21 (~$5.54/month), 4% discount applied the day after receiving the monitoring device was welcomed but I hope to do much better than 4%.

The monitoring device appears to “phone home” to Progressive HQ within seconds of turning the engine off (each engine on/off sequence counts as a “trip” in the reports). My only complaint is the speed of Progressive.com which is often very SLOOOOOOW! Progressive, if you are listening, PLEASE ramp-up your server and/or network infrastructure.

One interesting note — I maintain a paperless office environment so I immediately signed up for Progressive’s paperless option which netted me an amazing $36.53 (~$6.09/month) paperless discount (not sure if this will continue after I renew)! I sometimes get a dollar or two each month but never this much — thank you Progressive. Quite ironic that my paperless discount is more than my initial MyRate Program discount — HA!
